Halloween is any kid’s favorite time of year, but finding solutions to store-bought candy and all the sugary treats can be tough! Fortunately, finding healthy alternatives to Halloween candy only requires a little planning and creativity. Below are a few of our favorite kid-friendly (and adult-approved!) treats to make Halloween not just sweeter, but fun as well. By making simple changes like swapping milk chocolate for dark chocolate and marshmallows for bananas, you’re not only teaching kids healthier habits, but enforcing that healthy snacks can be just as delicious!
- Make “Banana Ghosts” by peeling and halving a banana, then adding two mini dark chocolate chips for eyes and one bigger dark chocolate chip for the mouth.
- Put a new twist on candy apples by dipping them in melted dark chocolate and rolling them in chopped pecans or almonds (optional if there are nut allergies), then freeze for 2-4 hours until chocolate is solid.
- Pumpkin has a number of health benefits, but clementine pumpkins are even healthier! Grab your kid’s favorite Cutie oranges, peel, and place a small cut of celery in the top for a stalk. These will be a hit at any classroom party!
- Prepare a “Witch’s Brew” smoothie with cucumber, apple, a dash of lime juice, non-fat or Greek yogurt (depending on your preference), and a little ice. Blend until smooth and then serve!
